Set up your own tracking domain

Serve the SourceTrack script from a subdomain of your own site. It needs one DNS record, and the step is optional: tracking works without it.

You need: a SourceTrack site where you are the owner or an admin, and access to the DNS settings of your domain (your registrar, or wherever your DNS is managed).

What it changes

A tracking domain makes the script load from a subdomain of your own site instead of from SourceTrack's address. SourceTrack does not measure whether that changes how many of your visitors are blocked, and does not promise that it will.

Step 1: Choose the subdomain in SourceTrack

  1. Open Settings, Tracking.
  2. Enter a short, neutral subdomain of your site, for example a.yourdomain.com. Use a subdomain, not your bare domain.
  3. Save. SourceTrack now shows the DNS record to add. It also appears on Setup & Health, under Check tracking coverage.

Step 2: Add the record at your DNS provider

The record is a CNAME. Its name is your subdomain, and its value is the target SourceTrack shows you. Copy the value from SourceTrack instead of typing it: it is the one thing that has to match exactly.

GoDaddy

  1. Open your domain in GoDaddy and go to its DNS tab.
  2. Add a new record and choose CNAME.
  3. Name: only the subdomain part, for example a, without your main domain.
  4. Value: the target from SourceTrack. Leave the TTL at its default.
  5. Save. GoDaddy says most changes take effect within an hour and some can take up to 48 hours.

Cloudflare

  1. Open the DNS Records page of your domain and select Add record.
  2. Choose CNAME. Enter your subdomain as the name and the target from SourceTrack as the destination. Check the form for the exact field names.
  3. Proxy status: if the form offers a choice, choose DNS only, then verify. We have not tested every proxy setting, so if verification fails, this is the first thing to check.
  4. Save.

Namecheap

  1. In Domain List, choose Manage next to your domain, then open Advanced DNS.
  2. Under Host Records, choose Add New Record and pick CNAME.
  3. Host: only the subdomain part, for example a. Namecheap adds your domain for you.
  4. Value: the target from SourceTrack, as a full domain name.
  5. Choose Save All Changes. Namecheap says to allow about 30 minutes.
  6. Remove any other URL redirect, ALIAS or A record on the same host: they conflict with a CNAME.

Another provider

The same three values apply anywhere: type CNAME, the subdomain as the name, and the SourceTrack target as the value. Look for "CNAME" in your provider's DNS settings, and use its help pages for the exact menus.

Step 3: Verify in SourceTrack

  1. Back on Setup & Health, choose Verify DNS on the tracking-domain card.
  2. If it says the record is not found yet, wait and try again. DNS changes are not instant, and your provider's own estimate above is the guide.
  3. Once the domain is active, the install snippet on Setup & Health loads the script from your subdomain.

A domain you added but have not verified is held for you for 7 days. After that, another SourceTrack site can claim it, so finish the DNS step within the week.

If it does not verify

  • The name has your whole domain in it. GoDaddy and Namecheap expect only the subdomain part, such as a. A doubled name like a.yourdomain.com.yourdomain.com is the usual typo.
  • The value was typed, not pasted. Copy it from SourceTrack again and compare.
  • Another record uses the same name. A CNAME cannot share a name with an A, ALIAS or redirect record. Remove the other one.
  • Proxy status. If your provider has a proxy option, set the record to DNS only.
  • Not enough time. Try again after your provider's estimate has passed.
